The download itself is rarely the expensive part. The MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 installers are about 3 MB and are taken once; the first launch then pulls chart history for every symbol and timeframe opened, and that is the largest single transfer of the whole process. After it the terminal settles into a thin, continuous price stream for whatever stays in the watch list, and orders themselves move almost nothing. On a metered connection the rule is short: install and open the charts once where data is cheap, and keep the watch list narrow everywhere else.

Three different costs that all get called the download

Downloading Exness hides three transfers that behave nothing alike. The first is the installer: a fixed file, taken once per computer, and the easiest to plan for because its size is known before it starts. The second is everything the terminal fetches the first time it runs, which is not fixed at all, because it depends on how many charts are opened and how far back they are scrolled. The third is the running cost of a live session, small per minute but charged for as long as the window stays open.

The first time a symbol is opened at a given timeframe, that history is requested and stored on the device; scrolling further back requests more. From then on the same chart needs only the newest bars, so the second and every later session on that symbol is close to free. That is why the same terminal can feel heavy one day and weightless the next without anything having changed.

What to do on an expensive connection, and what can wait

Two habits carry most of the saving. Trim the watch list to the symbols actually being followed, because every extra line in it is a price feed running for the whole session. And do the first opening of any new symbol — the step that pulls history — on a connection that is not charged by the megabyte.

The actions that genuinely cost almost nothing can be done anywhere: reading a balance, sending or closing an order, looking at a chart already loaded, or reading history the device has already stored. A session spent watching two symbols and sending a couple of orders is a light session by any measure.

  1. Take the installer whenever it suits you — it is the same few megabytes on any connection.
  2. Sign in and let the terminal finish its first start before judging how heavy it is.
